URL Blocking allows you to restrict access to specific Internet sites based on the properties of the URL—a keyword in the string, an exact string, an entire domain, or a subdomain. URL Blocking is global and URL driven—if a URL is blocked, it is blocked for the entire organization. By contrast, URL Filtering is policy-based and content driven—different policies can apply to different groups or organizations.
URL Blocking is especially useful as a rapid first response during a sudden Internet-threat outbreak. Examples include recent worms and orchestrated DoS (Denial of Service) attacks.
